An engineer reviewing technical production plans

Rum Technical Diagnostic

Find the technical decision behind the rum problem

A batch has drifted from its target. Yield is difficult to explain. A cellar decision cannot wait. Before changing the liquid or the process, establish what is known, what needs testing and which decision matters.

01

Start with an observable problem

The diagnostic is the entry point for producers with an operating issue, funded product teams and investors facing a defined technical decision. Bring a symptom, a constraint and the outcome your team needs to decide.

It is a poor starting point for a request to guarantee yield, approve an unseen liquid or quote an entire plant without evidence. The first conversation establishes whether a technical review fits the problem and which responsibilities belong to your team.

02

Prepare evidence that can be compared

Begin with the product or production question, the target profile and the point at which the deviation appeared. A sample alone may show a difference without explaining when it arose. The useful comparison connects liquid, records and operating context.

  • Relevant samples and the intended reference profile, where available.
  • Batch, process and analytical records linked to those samples.
  • Cask or inventory history for a maturation question.
  • The changes already tried, practical constraints and the decision deadline.

03

Agree the scope before the tests

José leads the review of the symptom, the available evidence and the gaps. The work then frames competing explanations, selects what needs testing and sets priorities. Remote review, sample evaluation and work on site depend on the question and access to the operation.

Do not treat every variable as an instruction to change it. First define the comparison that could support or challenge an explanation. If the records cannot distinguish two causes, that uncertainty belongs in the next test.

04

Leave with a decision and its limits

The aim is a clear view of the problem and a practical next step: findings supported by the review, unresolved evidence gaps and actions ordered around the decision. Implementation may involve product trials, a cellar review or a process-control project.

Scope, outputs and any follow-on work are agreed for the assignment. Timing and cost depend on the evidence and the work required; they are not fixed by this page.

Handle sensitive information deliberately

Use the enquiry form for a brief, non-confidential account of the challenge. Do not send proprietary formulas or sensitive production records in the first message. Agree what information is necessary and how it will be shared before exchanging it.

Project questions

Before you begin.

What do we prepare?

Prepare a short description of the problem, the target or reference, the relevant samples and records you have, and the decision you need to make. Missing data does not need to be disguised: identifying the gaps is part of framing the work.

Is the diagnostic suitable for a new facility?

It can frame a specific capacity, process or readiness decision before a build or expansion. It is not a turnkey construction offer. The technical scope, evidence and responsibilities must be agreed before facility work is proposed.
